Frequently asked questions
What is an AI Overview?
This is the AI-generated summary (from Google’s Gemini) that appears at the very top of certain search results.
In French, Google calls them "AI overviews." The summary directly answers the question and cites a few relevant sources, appearing before the standard search results.
Since when have AI Overviews are here ?
Google launched them in France on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, following a two-year delay caused by a dispute over press-related neighboring rights. The gradual rollout was scheduled to be completed by September 23, 2026.
How does it differ from the GeoBuster visibility test?
The visibility test queries six AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Mistral, Grok) just as a prospect would during a conversation.
The AI Overviews test checks what happens on Google's search results page. These are two different use cases: they involve neither the same audience nor the same query phrasing.
Why isn’t there an AI Overview for my keyword?
Google doesn’t display an AI Overview for every search; it reserves this summary for queries where it believes it can provide a useful answer.
Highly commercial or very short queries often lack them. Try using natural language phrasing, such as a question.
What exactly does the test check?
For the entered query, GeoBuster checks:
- Whether Google displays an AI overview
- Whether your site appears among the cited sources
- Whether your brand is named in the summary text
- Which other sites and competitors are cited instead of or alongside you.
My query isn’t showing an AI Overview. Is that normal?
Yes. Google doesn’t display them for every query.
They mostly appear for informational queries (such as "how," "why," or "what is the price") and much less frequently for brand searches or direct purchase searches.
Try phrasing it more like a question.
Do you need to rank well on Google to get cited?
It helps a lot.
In France, organic rankings remain strongly correlated with AI overviews.
But a good ranking isn't enough: Google selects its sources based on the quality of the answer they provide, not just their rank.
I am not cited anywhere. What should I do?
This is the case for most companies, especially following the recent arrival of AI overviews in France.
The GEO audit identifies the queries where you could be cited, the factors preventing this (technical issues, content, popularity), and the priority actions to take.
